Client: Terminal Operator
The client was evaluating plans to increase its capacity and enhance the operational capabilities of the port to handle larger container ships.
To inform its development plan, investment needs and timing, the client engaged Drewry to forecast development in container ship size likely to be deployed on the trades the terminal serves.
Drewry carried out a desk based review of annual historical calls at the port in terms of vessel length and vessel size (teu capacity) based on service patterns and main operators, ship sizes and ship size spread;
Drewry considered implications of the global container fleet in the relevant length class in term of age, orderbook on LOA per main/expected operator, length group and years of completion and orderbook development in terms of vessel sizes over next 7 years;
As well as the above, Drewry reviewed specific factors which could impact the decision of shipowners to deploy larger vessels on an existing or new service loop.
Drewry provided a forecast of vessel calls by size against a range of likely developments in the low and high case scenarios.
